I don't know how restrictive and boring women characters usually are until I saw the first 20 min of this rom-com by Amy Schumer. Wow, I thought. I didn't know girls and women could be like that ! You mean we have desires ? We have opinions about this world and we are real fleshy human beings ?
Trainwreck is about a modern single girl living in New York. Unlike the many women roles you see on TV and movies, this Amy have one night sex with men, she knows what turns her on and tells her men how to make her come. She works at a FHM style mag as a writer and has a neurotic boss played by the amazing and funny Tilda Swindon. She has a dad living in old people's home and argues with her sibling as to how to pay for his care. In short, in many ways, she is well, like a young man living in a big city.
What is more liberating is also how Amy looks. Not your traditional young female lead and you know that if she had not written this script, male director would be less likely to cast her in that role. And that's liberating because it tells women especially young women that your notion of a lead woman is wider than what men see. This is female gaze. An that's important because only yesterday I read in the Economist "Valley of the Dudes" about the Ellen Pao sex discrimination case that " female venture capitalist under perform their male colleagues by about 15% when there are only a few of them, but that the difference disappears when their numbers increase and they receive formal mentoring.." So any image on the all powerful screen nowadays have profound impact on our young women. Give them more and different images of women on screen, you got better motivated young women who are more likely to live out their own lives , and not what everyone else says.
